The Soundman

Belgium/Netherlands 2025 | Director: Frank Van Passel | Dutch with English subtitles | 118 minutes

Romance/Drama

Set in 1940 Belgium, this lyrical and artistically innovative film is a profoundly moving and poetic love story about passion, courage, imagination, and the pursuit of humanity amid an approaching storm. As Europe slides into war, two lives cross paths at Brussels’ legendary Flagey Radio building, the beating heart of Belgium’s national radio. Elza, a young Jewish actress making her debut in radio drama, meets Berre, a gifted sound effects specialist with a magical ear. She is enchanted by the spell of storytelling; he finds solace in the mysterious power of sound. Amid growing fear as authorities begin deporting Jewish refugees to France, their brief encounter sparks a tender love that defiantly dares to exist in a world about to fall silent under the weight of history – an enduring echo of hope amidst the darkness.
