SUMMARY:Seudah Shelishit: Exploring Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer
DESCRIPTION:Pirkei De-Rabbi Eliezer (The Chapters of Rabbi Eliezer) is one of the most imaginative and wide-ranging works of rabbinic literature—a Talmudic-era collection of midrashim that retells and expands upon the Torah’s stories\, from the creation of the world to Miriam’s leprosy in the Book of Numbers. Within its pages you’ll find Jewish ethics\, ancient customs\, legends\, and even mystical calculations about the beginning and the end of time. Traditionally attributed to Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus\, a 2nd-century sage\, the text was likely compiled in the eighth or ninth century. \nJoin Rabbi Russ for a fascinating journey through this remarkable work—a tapestry of storytelling\, interpretation\, and spiritual imagination. Together\, we’ll explore how Pirkei De-Rabbi Eliezer reshapes familiar biblical narratives\, connects them to enduring Jewish values\, and invites us to see Torah through a lens of creativity and wonder. \nEach session will combine close reading with lively discussion\, making the class accessible to both newcomers and seasoned learners. \nCome discover why Pirkei De-Rabbi Eliezer has captivated readers for centuries—and how its timeless insights continue to inspire and challenge us today. \nRegistration not required\, but appreciated. \n\n \n \n Seudah Shelishit Registration Form\n Please use this form to register for the entire course. \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n PhoneHow many attendees would you like to register?
SUMMARY:What’s Rabbi Reading? The Beth Tzedec Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us each month at Masala Art for lively conversation\, good company\, and great food as we explore Jewish literature together. The Beth Tzedec Book Club is open to all who love reading and discussing stories\, history\, and ideas through a Jewish lens. \nThis January\, we’ll be reading The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden. Set in rural Holland in 1961\, the novel follows Isabel\, whose orderly life is disrupted when her brother’s unpredictable girlfriend\, Eva\, comes to stay. As household items begin to vanish\, Isabel’s irritation turns into obsession\, blurring the lines between suspicion and desire. \nA tense\, atmospheric story about control\, buried history\, and the unsettling secrets that surface when two very different women are forced under one roof. \nWant to read ahead?
SUMMARY:Hazak Lunch & Learn: When Avenues Collide
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly Hazak Lunch & Learn\, featuring guest speakers on a variety of engaging topics. Enjoy a delicious meal while expanding your knowledge and connecting with the community. Each session offers fresh insights and lively discussions. Don’t miss this enriching lunchtime experience! This February\, we’ll be joined by Doug Coats. \nAvenues are supposed to run neatly side by side—so why do some of Calgary’s intersect? Why is Tomkins Square a triangle? And why does your GPS insist you “turn onto Anderson Road South West East”? \nAt our February Hazak Lunch & Learn\, Doug Coats will unravel the curious\, confusing\, and surprisingly fascinating stories behind Calgary’s road system. With a historian’s eye and a storyteller’s touch\, Doug will take us on a journey through the city’s planning puzzles\, oddities\, and enduring urban myths. Come for the lunch\, stay for the “aha!” moments—and you may never look at Calgary streets the same way again. \nAbout the Speaker: Doug Coats \nDoug Coats is a proud native Calgarian with a lifelong passion for the city’s history. He holds degrees in History and Education from the University of Calgary and spent 33 years teaching junior high social studies at Woodman School\, where he delighted generations of students with his love of stories and learning. \nAfter his first retirement\, Doug launched a second career at Heritage Park\, working full-time for nine years as a storyteller\, program writer\, and tour guide. Now happily retired again\, Doug devotes his time to exploring Calgary history and indulging his love of model railroading—two hobbies that pair perfectly with a deep curiosity about how cities\, and their streets\, come to be. \n\n \n \n Hazak Lunch & Learn\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n PhoneWhich session are you registering for?Thursday\, May 7We're always looking for new speakers who want to teach us about their work or passions.
SUMMARY:Guided by Hope: An Evening with the Israel Guide Dog Center
DESCRIPTION:On February 25\, join us for a powerful and deeply moving evening with the Israel Guide Dog Center. \nThe program will feature Noach Braun\, Founder and Co-CEO of the Israel Guide Dog Center\, who will share the story of how the organization has transformed independence and dignity for Israelis living with vision loss\, PTSD\, and other disabilities for more than three decades. \nJoining him is Naveh\, an IDF veteran living with PTSD\, alongside his service dog Jack. Naveh will speak candidly about his journey\, the realities of trauma after military service\, and the profound role Jack plays in his daily life—providing grounding\, confidence\, and the ability to re-engage with the world. \nTogether\, their stories offer a rare and compelling look at resilience\, partnership\, and healing\, and at how specially trained service dogs are changing lives in Israel\, especially in the aftermath of ongoing conflict. \nClick here to register.

\nIn February\, we’ll be reading Melting Point by Rachel Cockerell. This non-fiction narrative uncovers the little-known story of the Galveston Plan\, a bold early-20th-century effort that brought thousands of Russian Jews to the Texas Gulf Coast in search of safety and a new beginning. Through diaries\, letters\, and other firsthand accounts\, Rachel Cockerell reconstructs this remarkable migration—led in part by her own great-grandfather—and follows the families whose lives intertwined with major figures of the era. \nInventive and deeply human\, the book explores questions of belonging\, identity\, and what it truly means to seek a promised land. \n\n \n \n Book Club Registration\n Please register once for each session you plan to join. \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Phone(Required)There is NO CHARGE to join Beth Tzedec's Book Club. Join us for a thoughtful conversation about remembrance\, education\, and the power of exhibitions to foster understanding and community. \nAbout the Speaker \nBrandon Hearty is a Calgary-based cultural professional and community volunteer with a strong commitment to Holocaust remembrance\, education\, and civic engagement.
\nIn March\, we’ll be reading The Madwoman in the Rabbi’s Attic: Rereading the Women of the Talmud by Gila Fine. \nWhile women in the Talmud are often marginal and unnamed\, Fine focuses on six named heroines—Yalta\, Homa\, Marta\, Heruta\, Beruria\, and Ima Shalom—who seem to embody familiar antifeminist archetypes. Through close\, literary rereading\, she reveals far more complex characters and uncovers surprisingly nuanced rabbinic perspectives on marriage\, intimacy\, and women’s lives. In the process\, Fine challenges us to rethink not only these ancient stories\, but also how we read texts—and how we see one another. \n\n \n \n Book Club Registration\n Please register once for each session you plan to join. \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Phone(Required)There is NO CHARGE to join Beth Tzedec's Book Club.
