Our November Speaker
Growing up Polish-Catholic, Joanne Monica Kanarek had no exposure to Judaism during her childhood. Her family, like many Eastern-European Jews after the Shoah, kept their Jewish heritage a secret. Joanne would learn about her Jewish heritage during a Holocaust presentation as a young teen and would get involved in Jewish life in her twenties, when she was invited to her first Shabbat dinner in Krakow, Poland.
From not knowing anything about Judaism to becoming the president of the Krakow Hillel and a graduate of Paideia – The European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden – Joanne’s Jewish story spans countries.
