The New Jew

An entertaining four-episode TV documentary series that is both enlightening and humorous, The New Jew follows popular Israeli comedian and television personality Guri Alfi as he travels across the US on a quest to explore and better understand North American Jewish identity and culture – from the perspective of an Israeli. As he meets with an eclectic array of Jewish American communities and individuals, we are exposed to some of the diverse and creative ways in which North American Jews choose to express and connect with their Jewish identity. With abundant doses of levity provided by Alfi along the way, this engaging mini- series offers an insightful and fascinating portrait of contemporary North American Jewish life and the multiplicity of identities within it , while also touching on the cultural differences and growing rifts in relations between  North American Jews and the modern State of Israel.

Jay Joffe Memorial Program

The Jay Joffe Memorial Program was launched by the Jewish Historical Society of Southern Alberta (JHSSA) in 2009 to honour the memory of its long-serving founding president, Jay Joffe (1931-2006). This program is dedicated to promoting and featuring Jewish culture and history through activities such as lectures, exhibits, films or performances.

The directors of JHSSA are pleased to continue their support of the Beth Tzedec Jewish Film Festival through the sponsorship of “A New Jew”. This miniseries presents interviews covering a wide variety of Jewish experiences in North America with a thoughtful blend of humour and insight.
